Plant protein is good. Whey protein is better.

Whey is one of the few sources of complete protein in our diet. That’s why athletes and trainers love it so much.

Unfortunately, most whey on the market is sourced from factory farms that are bad for animals, and the planet.

And what’s bad for Earth is bad for us.

Protein-rich plants like peas, almonds, and chickpeas are cleaner, but they lack critical amino acids (and B12).

Plant protein makers mix and match ingredients to fill in the gaps, increasing the carbs (and the cost).

That’s not good for us either.

Rather than search the world for more plants to blend, we decided to find a ‘whey’ to make dairy protein work.

In partnership with our friends at Perfect Day, we’ve crafted an incredibly refreshing, animal-free protein water.

This is the first question almost everyone asks when they first hear the concept of “animal-free whey.” We don’t blame you! Whey has always come from cows, so why would you expect that to change? And yet here you are, shopping for animal-free whey protein water! The secret is right in our name: microflora. More specifically, microflora fermentation. Similar to the way kombucha and yogurt are made, we’ve found a way to teach microorganisms to ferment milk proteins that are identical to the ones found in dairy milk. It’s a really big deal, and it opens up a world of possibility.

Yes, much better! We think about it this way: whey comes from cows, and cows create a lot of methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas. In fact, the meat and dairy industry accounts for up to 15% of all emissions generated in any given year, and that’s expected to rise over the next few decades if we don’t change the way we eat. Because our whey protein comes from microorganisms, not large mammals, Flora generates up to 97% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than equivalent animal-based whey protein products. It’s a no brainer (literally—microflora don’t actually have brains)!

Yes! Flora is lactose free! Since our non-animal free whey protein is produced through fermentation (instead of cow’s milk), it’s totally lactose free!

Flora is not dairy free, because whey is dairy, even when you take the animal (and the lactose) out. If you have a milk protein allergy, you should treat Flora like you would any other dairy product.

Flora does not contain any GMOs! Our friends at Perfect Day make animal-free whey protein through fermentation. Microflora are basically microscopic factories, able to produce many of the vitamins and nutrients we need to thrive (this is one of the reasons gut health is so important). Since they can’t naturally make milk proteins on their own, we’ve given them a genetic “recipe” to teach them how to do it. So while Flora protein water has no GMOs in it (the microorganisms are filtered out long before bottling) it is not technically considered non-GMO.

In order to keep our prices as low as possible for you, we only sell Flora right here through this website. As we grow and expand, we hope to bring our products to grocery stores all over the country, and eventually the world. For now, though, we prefer to ship directly to our customers!

No one person or company can solve the climate crisis on their own. However, we believe individual actions add up, especially in places like the United States, which has contributed 25% of the world’s historic carbon emissions, and continues to be one of the planet’s top emitters to this day. By making the conscious choice to consume more climate friendly products (while also advocating for radical system change) we can tip the scales against the big polluters once and for all!

Cost and overhead previously rendered this semi-public form of communication unfeasible.
But advances in social networking technology from 2004-2010 has made broader concepts of sharing possible.
